“Understanding the Criminal Justice System Series” is held twice a year; Twelve (12) Students will be selected for each Series. Newton County Youths (9th - 12th Grade) For Students interested in the “Understanding the Criminal Justice System Series” the following guidelines are required:
1. Good School Attendance. You will miss 3 days of school in this program. We will request for your absences to be excused, but we can not guarantee that our request will be granted.
2. Grade 2.5 GPA or Higher
3. When you are accepted in the program students must participate, be focused and enthusiastic about understanding the Criminal Justice System. This program is a rewarding learning experience for Newton County High School Students.
The Series involves an introductory review of the following three components of the criminal justice system:
COMPONENT I- LAW ENFORCEMENT
COMPONENT 2-THE JUDICIAL PROCESS
COMPONENT 3-CORRECTIONS
The program was created to allow high school students to examine the criminal justice system with a combination of classroom instruction and real-life observations. The outline of the instruction is as follows:
I. Police Encounters
II. The Arrest
III. General overview of the court system (Federal, Magistrate Court, Superior Court, State Court, Juvenile Court)
IV. Discovery and Evidence
V. Court Observations
a. Bonds
b. Motions
c. Trials
d. Pleas and Sentencing
VI. The Corrections
The students will begin the Series in a classroom setting where police encounters and a general overview of constitutional rights will be explained. Students will view videos of real-life police encounters and an analysis of the police and citizen interactions will be discussed. During this first meeting, an overview of the court system will be presented. We will then transition to the initial judicial processes of the criminal justice system.
Students will have an opportunity to attend court in Newton County to see the criminal justice system in action. The Series is designed so that the students will be able to witness all phases of the criminal justice process. We will attend court on three occasions. Students will witness motions arguments, selection of juries, a portion of a trial, pleas and sentencing.
As you can tell this series will be very informative and interactive. I am very excited to be the facilitator of this program and look forward to engaging these students in meaningful discussions regarding the processes and workings of the American Criminal Justice System.
